ABOUT THE TRANSPLANT CENTER :

The Massachusetts General Hospital Transplant Center is a major transplant center offering adults and children all standard types of transplantation currently available, including heart, heart-lung, lung, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver, liver-small bowel and bone marrow. A multidisciplinary team of specialists from a number of MGH departments provide the highest quality care and success rates necessary in the transplant programs to meet the rigorous qualifications for Medicare reimbursement for all eligible patients.

The MGH multidisciplinary approach evaluates potential transplantation patients, including pre-transplant preparation and bridging, performs surgery and provides comprehensive post-transplant care, including immunosuppressive management, prevention of infectious disease, medical management and full complement of psychosocial care. Special tests and procedures performed include innovative treatments of immunosuppression such as the administration of antilymphocyte sera, OKT3 for rejection and novel approaches to tolerance induction that decreases the hazard of long-term immunosuppression. The division has also pioneered innovative approaches to the prevention of infectious disease in transplantation.

A founding member of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), MGH has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Transplant Surgery by Medicare and other leading private insurance carriers. MGH is one of the original founding members of the New England Organ Bank (NEOB), the oldest independent organ bank in the United States. MGH staff members also serve as the NEOB medical director and NEOB organ and tissue donation coordinator. MGH is a member of the Boston Transplant Consortium for Heart, Lung, Liver and Small Bowel.
